What do you see in the mirror?

James 1 (NIV)
Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. 23
Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks
at his face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets
what he looks like. 25 But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom,
and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be
blessed in what they do.

When you look in the mirror, what do you see? You may be young, or like me – not so
very young! You may be having a “bad hair day”. Each of us looks in the mirror every
morning to fix our hair and makeup to look the best we can – with what we have to work
with. We may or may not be happy with the results, but we leave that reflection we see in
the mirror and go on with our day.

The verse I have quoted from James 1 is often thought of as pointing out our
inadequacies as revealed in the Word of God. And yes, just as we have to work on our
natural selves as revealed by our bathroom mirror, so there are things we must strive to
improve as revealed in the scriptures. However, we miss the true desire of our Father
God when we relegate His Word to a list of “dos and don’ts” for our lives.

The Word of God is a mirror to us of who we are in Christ Jesus. I’d like to share with
you just three of these things – although there are countless benefits available to us under
the New Covenant. We are no longer under the law, where we work and strive to live up
to a list that is always just beyond our ability to perform.

Our Father has provided all we need in Christ Jesus through the Holy Spirit – reflected to
us each time we look in the mirror of His Word.

1) In Christ, the veil of separation between God and man was torn in two and so as we
look in the mirror of God’s Word, we are being changed by the Spirit of the Lord into
the very image of Christ. The Bible says we are “being transformed into the same image
from glory to glory” (2 Corinthians 3:18). This is the Word, folks – this is not just an
opinion! We may not be able to do but so much with our hair and makeup in the natural
image, but our spiritual image is being gloriously transformed to the very image of Christ
as we are hearers and doers of His Word! Glory!

2) We are more than conquerors in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:37). A conqueror is one
who can “gain mastery over or win by overcoming obstacles or opposition” (Merriam-
Webster). In Christ, we have been reborn to fight the good fight of faith; we can run to
every battle of life, great or small, with full knowledge that He has made us well able to
overcome and be victorious. The storms of life come and go, but we are stedfast in the
knowledge that He will bring us through to victory.

3) The mirror of God’s Word tells us that we have divine purpose, an eternal reason for
being here. We were born “for such a time as this”. When you look in your bathroom
mirror, you are looking at a whole new creature, one who the world has never seen
before. When we are born again in Christ, the old person is gone. The very Spirit of the
Living God has taken residence in us. Wherever we go, however we may feel, whatever
comes our way – the God of the universe is not only for us and with us, He is in us as the
Holy Spirit took residence when we accepted Christ as our Savior and Lord.

So – take a good look in the mirror, ladies! You will see a woman is the process of a
glorious transformation; one who is more than a conqueror; an person walking in eternal
purpose with a divine nature transforming us into the image of His Dear Son!
