Is Your House Really Clean?

But God told Samuel, "Looks aren't everything. Don't be impressed with his looks and stature. I've already eliminated him. God judges persons differently than humans do. Men and women look at the face; God looks into the heart."

Have you ever heard it said, “You can judge a person’s life based on the cleanliness of their home.” I have heard many people refer to this thought, in and out of the church. The concept tends to be that if a person’s home is organized and clean, then it is a reflection that their personal life is organized and put-together, as well. And…if their home is messy, it is a reflection of who they really are, Messy.
Picture this scenario…. someone is coming over for dinner and you clean your house to make it presentable to your guest…which we ALL do from time to time. The guest comments repeatedly about the beauty and the warmth of your home failing to realize that you have shoved all of your trash in your cabinets and drawers. As time goes by, you forget about all the clutter and have what most affectionately call “junk drawers”.

It is the same with our hearts. We work to create picture perfect “homes", haphazardly forgetting what is most important….our hearts. We scramble to get dressed, put on make-up, and use all of the right words, disregarding the disorganization that we have created in order to impress those we come in contact with. In 1 Samuel 16:7, God lets Samuel know that looks are not everything. While men and women seemed to be impressed and moved by the outward, God judges us based on our hearts. So, while we often focus on the outward, God is calling us to deal with our inward.

The drawers of our heart really tell us what type of person we are. Are we constantly purging the private areas of our hearts or are we cramming them with junk in order to “appear” clean. Let’s be motivated to do some real “house-cleaning”. When our inward is clean, others will be impressed by the spirit within us that draws them to a deeper walk, not only our outward appearance.
